Due to how I was raised by my parent's religion plays an important part of my life. I am a member of the Missouri Lutheran Synod, so I was very interested in hearing the history of the St. Louis Cathedral which is the oldest cathedral that was established in 1720. Today I had chosen to light a candle in memory of love ones who has passed.
My most enjoyable tour was the Pharmacy museum. I work in healthcare, so I was very interested in hearing the history of Pharmaceutical. Here is a picture of the sign for the Pharmacy tour.
This was a guided tour that was enjoyable and fun. It was fun because the tour guide made me smile and laugh. He informed our tour group of the history of different types of medicines that were used in the past years. I had the opportunity to view old medicine bottles, syringes, needles, old concoctions, and old home remedies. Many years ago, before the time of Pharmacists, people tried to care for themselves. Treating one's ailment would be done through word of mouth from a friend or family. People in the past used home remedies and was unaware of the unexpected outcomes by mixing their own homemade compounds in their own homes.
Today I learned that Louis Joseph Dufilho, Jr., of New Orleans became America's first licensed pharmacist in the early 1800's and he opened the shop that is now home to the New Orleans Pharmacy Museum in 1823.
I have been reeducated on the symbol of medicine. The snake and staff are known as the "Rod of Asclepius". Asclepius is the Greek god of Medicine and Healing. The snake itself symbolizes rejuvenation.
